DWI and Leandra's Law
Leandra’s Law is the state of New York’s legislative response to a tragic incident in which a young girl was killed while riding in a vehicle with her intoxicated mother and friend. Essentially, Leandra’s law establishes a new Class E Felony, providing for stricter penalties against motorists who operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs while a child who is 15 years of age or younger is a passenger in the vehicle. Leandra’s law also strengthen restrictions against motorist sentenced for Driving While Intoxicated, requiring such drivers to have an ignition interlock device installed on any vehicle they own or operate.
